Is time speeding up or is it just me?

Time goes so fast anymore. I remember as a child thinking summer vacations lasted forever. Now I hardly blink and the kids are back in school. My birthdays come so fast I am embarrassed to acknowledge them.

I don’t know what happened to my children’s childhood. The years were gone before I had a chance to really appreciate them. And now the grandkids are here, and the fun begins again. But just as before, the years are flying by.

I have five grandchildren between the ages of 12 and 4 months. The middle two girls are losing teeth. The oldest boy is in the midst of junior-high-ism. I know that isn’t a word, but I am also sure you know what I mean. My smaller little girl has started preschool and the baby is already smiling and cooing.

I get busy in the “business” of each day and rush to get everything done. I push to get my writing time in, keep up with household chores, church responsibilities, and so on. My four children live in four different states, and my parents in the fifth state. Visiting in any meaningful way is almost impossible. Suddenly I realize I haven’t seen the baby since Christmas, and now he has two teeth and smiles at familiar faces.

If there is one thing I need to learn it is prioritization. What life says is important (like clean underpants and a spotless kitchen) may not be as important as packing up the car and making memories. Our minister said Sunday that he has never heard anyone in their old age say “I wish I had spent more hours in the office.” I have never heard anyone say “I wish I had spent more time on the laundry and dishes.” There is a lesson here for me.

My prayer for you, as well as myself, is that we will allow ourselves to be less than perfect in the things of the world and spend more time enjoying what God has given us.

Blessings to you this week, and enjoy the hours you have been gifted with -- Regina
